December 9th, 2016: Dec 31 2016 Leap Second

On December 31, 2016 at 23:59:59, a positive leap second will be added into the UTC time. This may affect some users of NovAtel GLONASS capable receivers. It is recommended that if you have a GLONASS model, to check your firmware version and upgrade if necessary.

Affected Products

  • OEMV Series
    • OEMV-1, OEMV-2, OEMV-3
    • Required version 3.907 or higher
  • OEM6 Series
    • OEM615, OEM628, OEM638
    • Required version 6.510 (OEM060510RN0000, OMP060510RN0000) or higher

This only affects GLONASS-enabled receivers. GLONASS tracking will be temporarily interrupted on units operating during the leap second addition. GPS tracking will not be affected and will continue to output a GPS position during the event. OEM6 units may report an integrity warning.

Receivers powered up during the leap second introduction that have an outdated almanac will experience difficulty tracking GLONASS satellites. GLONASS tracking will return to normal after a new GPS almanac is automatically downloaded from the satellites by the receiver.
